Veiled Presence is the title of the current Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition by Golsa Yaghoobi, which opened on August 25 and continues through September 5 in the University of Arkansas Fine Arts Center Gallery. The bold black and white paintings confront the viewer with this Iranian artist’s interpretation of the world of women in the Islamic world. The paintings include excerpts of poetry written by Iranian women, presented in the flowing Farsi script. It is a beautiful, yet haunting installation.
The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces, which will open on September 10, is a traveling exhibition which examines many of the same themes, although here “the veil” is not limited to the Islamic head covering, but includes interpretations of bridal veils, the Roman Catholic nun’s habit and other manifestations of veiling in various cultures.
