Size and Diversity. The Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences,
named after former University President and United States Senator
J. William Fulbright, offers premier programs in the liberal arts
at the University of Arkansas.
Consisting of 19 academic departments, the College offers degrees
in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Several
departments and the Dean's Office are in Old Main, home to Fulbright
College and for many, the most beloved symbol of higher education
in Arkansas.
• Quick Facts.
— College enrollment has reached 6,638 in
the current academic year. On average, the College offers 1,722
classes every semester. Students are encouraged to develop critical
thinking skills and to see the world from a variety of perspectives.
— Our students have an average ACT of 25, while new freshmen
have an average GPA of 3.5.
— Approximately 48.5% are female, 51.5% are male.
— Nearly 75 percent of students at the University of Arkansas
receive an average of $100 million in financial aid and scholarships
each year.
• Flourishing Honors Program. The College's
flourishing Honors Program attracts the best students in the country
and offers one of the university's premier scholarships, the Sturgis
Fellowship. The average ACT of students in the College's Four-Year
Scholars Program is 31.4. The Sturgis Honors Scholars Grants Program
offers Fulbright Honors students funding for research projects and
study abroad.
• One of America's Best Buys. The U of A is one of
"America's 100 Best College Buys," according to U.S.
News and World Report. Princeton Review describes the
university as "among the most affordable of major research
universities" in the country.
• Rewarding Careers. Fulbright College graduates
enjoy rewarding careers as U.S. district judges, diplomats, corporate
leaders, broadcasters, scholars, psychologists, scientists, and
performing artists. Alumnus Robert Maurer is the co-inventor of
fiber optic cable, while Edith Irby Jones became the first black
graduate from the University of Arkansas School for Medical Sciences.

• Mission. Fulbright College takes its mission from
the Fulbright legacy and from his own writings. He said that the
purpose of higher education is "the teaching of things in perspective,
toward the purposes of enriching the life of the individual, cultivating
the free and inquiring mind, and advancing the effort to bring reason,
justice, and humanity into the relations of men and nations."
Innovative Programs. The College's Programs in Creative
Writing and Translation are ranked among the best in the country.
Outside evaluators consistently give high marks to the English and
history departments. Research programs in chemistry and physics
are nationally competitive, and the College is building equally
strong programs in the other sciences. Students enrolled in the
interdisciplinary doctoral program in Environmental Dynamics receive
training in geographic information systems at the innovative Center
for Advanced Spatial Technologies.
