What's available
As a former Animal Services Officer once said, "The Betty Lighton
Education Room isn't doing any good if it just sits there."
So it has been put into use in two ways.
- The first is for groups:
instead of just touring the shelter, the group first hears a short
talk about the subject of interest.
- The second is for individuals:
videos and books and other literature is available for anyone to see
or read. There are also many handouts on particular problems of both
dogs and cats.
At the start of the school year, letters are
sent out to remind local school principals that the
Fayetteville Animal
Shelter conducts education programs at the Shelter for Grades K-6.
Videos, live animals, and written materials are presented in the
Education Room. After the classroom presentation and discussion, the
students are given a tour of the Shelter.
Presentations have been prepared for such topics as:
- Avoiding animal bites
- Proper care of pets
- Responsible animal ownership
- Shelters--why they exist and what they do
- The role of animal control in the community
- Wildlife--their variety and place in our world.
Mitzi Rankin, Animal Services Education
Coordinator, continues to visit schools,
but she particularly wants to
encourage field trips to
the shelter. Students can see more animals and get a more complete presentation at the shelter.
To schedule a class visit and program, call Mitzi at 444-3456.
