How Much Is That Dog or Cat?
Have you thought about what a bargain a pet from the Shelter is? Think
about the costs of all the things included in the $50 adoption fee (prices
as of January 2000):
- All animals are treated for fleas, dewormed, and get a free leash and
city tag, a $27.50 - 37.50 value (the lower figure is for the city tag for
spayed or neutered pets).
- Cats get a FELV test ($19) and dogs get a heartworm test ($18).
- Both cats and dogs get basic vaccinations, a value of $44 for cats
(FVRCP, FELV, rabies, and fecal exam) and $58 for dogs (DHCPPC,
bordatella, rabies, and fecal exam).
- The pet is spayed or neutered, a value of about $43 (neutering of a
cat), $57 (neuter, dog), $60 (spay, cat), or $72 (spay, dog). If a female
is pregnant or in heat, the fee might be as much as $20 higher.
If you had to pay for all this yourself, this is what you might be
spending:
- For a male cat, $135.50 - 143.50
- For a female cat,$150.50 - 160.50
- For a male dog, $160.50 - 170.50
- For a female dog, $175.50 - 205.50
Adopting an animal from the Shelter is the right thing to
do, in more ways than one!
