Statistics for 1996
During 1996, 1500 stray and 718 surrendered animals from Fayetteville were sheltered, as well as
1460 animals from outside the city, giving a total of 3,678 animals sheltered. 407 animals were
reclaimed by owners and 546 were adopted. 2,465 animals were euthanized, about two-thirds of
all the animals that were sheltered. There are just too many animals and not enough homes.
Note that the number of animals euthanized plus the total adopted or reclaimed do not equal the
number of animals sheltered. This is because some animals die in the shelter and some leave by
other means (some are placed in foster care, for example). Also, there are about 125 animals in
the shelter at any time.
Fayetteville Animal Services also picked up 127 livestock strays and 317 wildlife, presented 58
safety programs, and investigated 55 animal bites. The Shelter received 5,554 citizen calls.
