Need Based Aid

  • The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is a federal grant which is awarded to students who meet all the following criteria: PELL recipient, US Citizen, enrolled full-time (12 semester hours per term), meet the rigorous high school program requirements as defined by the federal government, are within their first or second academic years and meet all other Title IV program requirements. To qualify for the second year ACG, the student must meet all the above criteria and have completed 24 semester hours with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. To be eligible for the ACG a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) is a federal grant which is awarded to third and fourth year students who are PELL recipients, US Citizens, and enrolled full-time (12 semester hours per term) in a SMART eligible major with a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the prior term. The student must be enrolled in at least one course that is specific to and required for the National SMART grant-eligible major during the term(s) for which they receive the SMART grant.  They must also meet all other Title IV program requirements. To be eligible for the SMART grant a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).


  • The GO! Opportunities Grant Program is available to students who graduate from an Arkansas high school or complete the GED in Arkansas after Dec. 31, 2006 who are first-time college students. Please note that GED recipients must be between the ages of 16 and 18. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet other eligibility rules and regulations to receive the GO!


  • The Wal-Mart Scholars Endowed Fund was established in 2003 through the generosity of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to provide financial assistance to students who are Arkansas residents with demonstrated financial need. Annual awards of $2500 are made to approximately 30 new recipients each year. The award is renewable for up to three additional years of undergraduate study as long as the student is making satisfactory academic progress and has at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Recipients will be chosen from full-time, financially needy students when the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received by July 1 preceding the Fall Semester. No other application form is necessary. In addition to completing the FAFSA, students who are currently Wal-Mart associates or dependents of Wal-Mart associates are encouraged to apply and should send an e-mail to kattie@uark.edu listing the associate's Employee ID Number for verification of association with Wal-Mart.

  • The Workforce Improvement Grant Program was established by the state of Arkansas in 2003 to help meet the financial needs of working independent students. Annual awards are in the amount of $1800 less the amount of the student's Pell grant award. Approximately 35 recipients are chosen annually. Recipients need to be undergraduate Arkansas residents who are U. S. citizens or permanent residents at least 24 years of age. Recipients are chosen from those with the greatest unmet financial need, excluding student loans. Recipients will be chosen when the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received by July 15 preceding the Fall Semester. No other application form is necessary.


  • The Work-Study Success Grant (WSSG) is an institutionally funded need based program to assist students. The WSSG award is contingent upon the student’s agreement to participate in the Federal Work Study (FWS) program for an average of 10-12 hours per week. The combined total of the WSSG and FWS awards may be as much as $5500. To apply for the WSSG a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must maintain full-time enrollment and a 2.00 GPA as well as completing the work-study requirement.
