Student development studies courses are designed to provide learning
skills, orientation to University procedures and policies, goal-setting,
and career development. The courses do not earn degree credit in any
college, but do contribute to the grade-po int average.
Courses: Developmental Studies (DVST)
- 0013 Learning Skills (I, II) An academic skills development
course designed to assist the student in gaining the skills of
independent learning. Topics include listening, notetaking,
test-taking, textbook study, etc. Emphasis is on application of
learning skills techniques to current academic course work.
- 003V Special Topics (1-3) (I, II, S) (on demand) May be
offered to provide specific academic support for special populations
and/or to provide specific academic support for students enrolled in
targeted academic courses. Variable credit of 1-3 hours as designated
for a given topic. May be repeated when content changed. Prerequisite:
consent.
- 0041 Goal-Setting Seminar An 8-week course providing
instruction in behavioral self-management techniques as a means for
improving academic performance. Students will receive practice in
strategies for monitoring current behavior and setting achievable
goals. Teaching methods include journal and essay writing and directed
class discussions.
- 0051 Student Career Development (I, II) Development of
self-awareness and decision-making skills related to selecting a
career. Practical methods for obtaining career information, writing
effective resumes, and conducting a job search.
- 007V Student Development Studies (I, II) A structured,
individualized program of assessment and personal or academic skill
development. Designed in conference with the assigned instructor,
utilizing self-paced materials in the Learning Skills Laboratory and
teacher-student interaction. Two hours each week per one hour of credit
up to a maximum of three hours credit. Prerequisite: consent.

- 5013 School Organization and Administration (I, S)
Introductory course in organization of American public education;
principles and concepts of organization and administration;
socioeconomic, political, and professional factors relating to education
and school administration.
- 5023 The Elementary Principalship (II, S) Examination and
study of problems of organization and administration of the elementary
school in relation to current theories and practices, particularly as
they relate to classroom teaching.
- 5033 The Secondary Principalship (II, S) Duties and
responsibilities of the high school principal.
- 5043 Supervision of Curriculum and Instruction (I, S) Basic
principles of curriculum development, supervision and alignment;
selection of instructional materials, assessment of instruction and
learner performance, staff development and eva luation.
- 5073 School Facilities Planning & Management (II, S)
School facilities planning, management, cost analysis, operations, and
maintenance of the school plant. Prepares school teachers to plan and
manage a facilities program that is supportive of the educational
program and responsive to its needs.
- 5083 School-Community Relations (II, S) Community analysis,
politics and education; power groups and influences, school issues
and public responses; local policy development and
implementation; effective communication and public relations
strategies.
- 5093 Effective Leadership in School Settings (II, S)
Strategic planning, group facilitation and decision-making,
organizational behavior and development, professional ethics and
standards, principles of effective educational leadership.
- 5163 Current Practical Problems in State and Local School
Administration (S) Current problems facing school administrators in
Arkansas. Emphasis is placed on finance, transportation, textbook
selection, hot lunches, building needs, and other administrative
problems.
- 560V Workshop (On demand)
- 5663 Computers in Research A basic course in the use of
computers in the educational research process. Selection and evaluation
of computer software, operation and selection of hardware, creating
educational research materials, and uses of computers as educational
research tools are considered.

- 699V Seminar (On demand) Prerequisite: advanced graduate
standing.
- 6093 School Governance (II, S) The principles and problems
growing out of the relationship between the local board of education,
the employed personnel, and the community.
- 6103 School Finance (I, S) Survey of the field of
educational finance, including background, principles, structure,
operation, and current problems. Local, state, and national school
funding techniques and formulas are reviewed with emphasis
on the Arkansas system of school support. Prerequisite: consent.
- 6123 Human Resources in School Administration (I, S)
Provides students with a broad perspective concerning the management of
human resources on the educational setting. Organizational structure is
examined along with processes, procedures, and techniques necessary for
an effective personnel management program. Personnel policies are
developed and critiqued.
- 6153 School Law Legal aspects of public and private
schooling: federal and state legislative statutes and judicial
decisions, with emphasis upon Arkansas public education.
- 6163 Managing Educational Accountability (I, II) Management
procedures to satisfy legislative and constituency accountability
requirements. State mandates are treated in addition to educational
planning, needs assessment, management by objectives, and other
results-oriented management procedures.
- 6173 School Business Management (II, S) Fiscal and resource
management in public schools: budgeting, insurance, purchasing, and
accounting. Prerequisite: M.Ed. in educational administration, or
consent.
- 6203 State and National School Administration (II, S)
Principles and practices of national, state, and county educational
administration.
- 6333 Planning for Educational Change Overview and analysis
of the change process in education.
- 6503 Administrative Theory & Leadership Review of
seminal and current theories of effective leadership, administration,
and management in school settings; designed to develop diagnostic
skills necessary for successful administration of complex educational
enterprises.
- 6523 Advanced Application of Educational Leadership A review
of seminar and current works on leadership as applied to the
educational setting. Provides knowledge of classic and contemporary
strategies for leadership. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.
- 6533 Educational Policy Examination of the research and
theory related to the evolution of local, state, and federal governance
and educational policy. Emphasis given to the consideration of
procedures involving policy formulation, implementation, and analysis.
- 6563 Educational Administration and Human Behavior
Examination of research and theory related to the utilization of human
resources within educational organizations.
- 660V Workshop
- 672V Field Studies (I) Provides to advanced graduate
students, under staff direction, an opportunity to act in the capacity
of consultants to local school districts or other educational agencies
in organizing, conducting, and evaluating intens ive school studies.
- 674V Internship (I, II, S)
- 680V Educational Specialist Project (1-6) An original
project, research paper, or report required of all Ed.S. Degree
candidates. Prerequisite: admission to Ed.S. program and consent.
- 690V Directed Readings in Educational Administration (1-3)
Selected readings from classical books and authors in the field.
- 699V Seminar Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing and
consent.
- 700V Doctoral Dissertation (I, II, S) Prerequisite:
candidacy or consent of student's advisory committee.
