Zoology (ZOOL)

Requirements for the B.S. degree with a major in zoology: A minimum of 124 semester hours is required, including 40 hours in the major as specified below.

1. BIOL1543/1541L or equivalent. Majors may take additional 1000-level courses (BIOL, BOTY, and/or ZOOL), BUT may apply a maximum of eight 1000-level credits toward the degree. Students who are exempt from Principles of Biology but have not received credit via advanced placement or CLEP must take an additional 4 hours of credit in elective courses related to their major.

2. Bibliographic Practicum, BIOL 2001

3. Biology CORE: BIOL 2533; BIOL 3023; BIOL 3323; BIOL 3863 plus a minimum of 1 hr. of laboratory selected from BIOL 2531L, BIOL 3321L or BIOL 3861L

4. An additional 22 credits including at least two lab courses at the 3000-4000 level. A minimum of one course must be chosen from at least two of the following divisions:

a. morphological and developmental zoology (ZOOL 2404, ZOOL 2443/2441L, ZOOL 4544, ZOOL 4554);

b. systematic and evolutionary zoology (ZOOL 2814, ZOOL 4623, ZOOL 4723, ZOOL 4733, ZOOL 4763, or BIOL 4433, BIOL 4613, BIOL 4724);

c. regulatory and environmental zoology (ZOOL 2213/2211L, ZOOL 4814/4810L, ZOOL 4833/4830L, or BIOL 4234/4230L, BIOL 4263/4261L, BIOL 4353, BIOL 4463, BIOL 4503, BIOL 4513/4511L, BIOL 4824/4820L).

The Fulbright College writing requirement must be met from courses that require a paper, BIOL 498V Senior Thesis, or by an honors thesis.

Requirements in the cognate science and mathematics include the following:

a. CHEM 1103/1101L, CHEM 1123/1121L (or equivalent), CHEM 3603/3601L, CHEM 3613/3611L;

b. PHYS 2013/2011L, PHYS 2033/2031L (or equivalent);

c. MATH 2554, (MATH 2564 is recommended)

d. STAT 2023 (Biostatistics) or STAT 4003/4001L (Statistical Methods).

Requirements for a minor in zoology: Students must take BIOL 1543/1541L or equivalent. In addition, 18 semester hours of zoology and biology courses are required, with at least one course in each of the three general areas outlined the requirements for a B.S. degree in zoology (morphological and developmental zoology, systematic and evolutionary zoology, and regulatory and environmental zoology). Students must notify the departmental chair of their intent to minor in zoology.
