THE LAW
Students are expected to be familiar with and observe all provisions of federal, state, and local laws.
Violators of public law may be referred to civil authorities for appropriate action and may be subject to disciplinary action through the University judicial system. In general, students who violate federal, state, or local laws while off-campus will not be subject to University jurisdiction unless the clear and distinct interest of the University is involved or affected. Ordinarily, when such violations occur the University will not intervene and students would be answerable to civil authorities only. A decision that the University's interest is involved or affected by a violation of law will be based upon the relevance of one or more of the following elements:
1. the academic integrity of the University is violated
2. the maintenance of the University's program of higher education is jeopardized
3. the safety and welfare of persons and/or property in the University community are threatened.
This general policy does not in any way limit the application of more specific provisions pertaining to student conduct.
