3273 Children's Literature Comprehensive study of children's books, their authors, and illustrators. Prerequisite: PSYC 3093 or HES 4413, Corequisite RDNG 3343.

4013 Integrated Communication Skills Focuses on the methodology of facilitating pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and early elementary children's literacy development. Emphasis is on the integration of the communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening across the curriculum. 4208 Content Integration Integrates the curriculum and teaching strategies of mathematics, science, and social studies in childhood education. Students are required to develop a professional portfolio and participate in specified field experiences. Prerequisits: Senior standing , ELED 3273, RDNG 3343, all math, science and social studies requirements, or by consent. Corequisite: ELED 4001, 4013.

4313 Kindergarten: Rationale and Curriculum (Fa) Rationale and curriculum of an early childhood education program, with special attention given to the kindergarten. Required of early childhood students. Prerequisite: PSYC 3093.

4323 Kindergarten: Methods and Materials Methods and materials used in early childhood education with emphasis on the kindergarten. Prerequisites: PSYC 3093; ELED 3323, 4313, and RDNG 3343.

5003 Childhood Seminar This course is designed to synthesize the foundational content presented in the Master of Arts in Teaching core courses. If focuses on refinement of the generalized knowledge to accommodate specialized content relevant to young children. Professional attitudes, knowledge and skills applicable for today's early childhood educator are addressed.

5013 Historical, Contemporary and Future Perspectives of Childhood Education A problems course in childhood education which deals with historical, current and future concerns. These early childhood concerns include demographic trends, family composition and change, instructional models, social/political/economic issues, parent/community involvement, and evolving professional roles.

5023 Case Study in Childhood Education Provides the students with experience in conducting case studies related to childhood education. In addition, students gain knowledge regarding practices used in ethnographic research.. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5343 Early Childhood Education: History, Purposes and Programs (Su) An advanced course in early childhood education.

5363 Child Behavior and Development Advanced study of research and theory. Prerequisite: PSYC 3093 or consent.

5433 Curriculum Reconstruction Elementary school curriculum.

5453 Children's Literature Current survey of children's literature. Prerequisite: ELED 3273 or consent.

5473 Evaluation Techniques Evaluation of learning activities in terms of educational objectives.

5493 Advanced Course in Children's Literature (Su) Designed for teachers who already have a good background in the field of children's literature but want to extend their knowledge. Prerequisite: ELED 3273 and 5453 or consent.

5513 Teaching Mathematics Advanced course in teaching mathematics.

5543 Teaching Social Studies Purposes, content, psychology, materials, and methods for teaching the social sciences in the elementary school. Emphasis on principles and procedures for combining the social studies with other areas of the curriculum in broad unit instruction.

5553 Teaching Science The influence of science on the community, on the home, and the child. Use of science in the living and learning of the child at school.

5563 Studies Affecting Elementary Education Examination and critical evaluation of investigations and research which have special significance for elementary education.

5573 Writing for Children Writing stories, poetry, articles, features and/or books for children and young adults. Revising, editing, and preparing manuscripts for publication. Prerequisite: ELED 5453 or consent.

5593 Teaching Language Arts The place of the language arts in the elementary curriculum. Exploration of materials, content, practices, and methods used in reading, speaking, listening, and writing experiences.

Reading (RDNG)

Courses in reading are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A basic course, RDNG 0003, is available to freshmen who are seeking assistance in improving their study skill. Emergent and Developmental Literacy, RDNG 3343, is a required course in the professional sequence for elementary teachers and a recommended elective for those preparing for teaching in middle and secondary schools.

Courses at the graduate level are designed for experienced teachers who have the goal of improving professional competence in reading and of qualifying for the Arkansas certificate as a K-12 Reading Specialist.

Courses: Reading (RDNG)

0003 Developmental Reading A structured individualized laboratory course in the improvement of reading skills. For students not meeting U of A admission reading placement standards. University credit given; does not count toward graduation.

3343 Emergent and Developmental Literacy This course focuses on theories of children's emerging literacy and on the continuing development of literacy abilities in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and early elementary years. Prerequisite: PSYC 3033 or 3093 Corequisite EDED 3273.

4123 Reading and Reading Activities for Secondary Content Area Teachers (Fa, Sp) The preparation of secondary teachers in the various content areas to improve reading ability and motivation in their specific areas.

4553 Reading for Special Populations An introductory course in the diagnosis of reading difficulties of special populations for students majoring in special education. Consideration given to the evaluation/teaching process as a cycle with phases of: (a) diagnosis; (b) planning; (c) implementation; and (d) evaluation, leading to (e) modification of the diagnosis, new plans, and implementation of new teaching strategies. Prerequisite: RDNG 3343.

Graduate standing is prerequisite to the following courses:

5002 Applied Practicum Provides laboratory experiences for RDNG 5123 (Literacy Assessment) and RDNG 5113 (Readings in Early Childhood Education). Corequisite RDNG 5113 and 5123. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5043 Reading in Secondary Schools Methods and materials of teaching reading in secondary schools with emphasis on remedial and developmental reading problems of students.

5113 Readings in Early Childhood Education Will continue to develop understandings of classic studies and will explore the impact these have had on the most recent issues in early childhood education.

5123 Literacy Assessment Focuses on assessment of young children's literacy skills. Techniques discussed include informal observation, miscue analysis, and portfolio assessment.

5443 Teaching Reading Teaching of reading to children; techniques, research, and modern practices. Prerequisite: RDNG 3343 or consent.

5483 Correlates of Reading Process The developmental program is emphasized through a student of the reading process. Learning theory and research are related to reading instruction and materials through the development and application of evaluative criteria based on an understanding of reading process. Prerequisite: RDNG 3343 or consent.

5533 Corrective Reading in the Classroom Emphasizes the diagnosis and remediation of reading difficulties in the classroom setting. Students are expected to become familiar with causes of reading failure, diagnosis instruments and procedures, principles of report writing, and corrective instructional methods and materials. The course is open to graduate students with instructor's consent. Enrollment limited to 20. Prerequisite: RDNG 5483.

5583 Corrective Reading Practicum Laboratory experience in which students diagnose reading difficulties and practice remedial measures under the direct supervision of the instructor. Emphasis is given to continuous diagnosis and to the use of commercially produced materials and trade books in remediation. Enrollment limited to 15. Prerequisite: RDNG 5533.

6113 Individual Diagnosis and Remediation in Reading Specialized techniques and materials for diagnosis and remediation of reading disability. Rationale of the clinical setting is developed through emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis, program planning, and remediation. Enrollment limited to 20. Advanced graduate students only. Prerequisite: RDNG 5483 and 5533.

6123 Remedial Reading Practicum Each student practices diagnostic and remedial teaching skills by tutoring a child under the supervision of the instructor. Prerequisite: RDNG 6113.

6133 Investigations in Reading Research techniques and findings in reading are extensively reviewed by the student. Student is expected to culminate activity in this course by identifying a research problem in the field of reading for possible further study. Prerequisite: reading certification or consent.

6143 Organization of Reading Programs Study of the problem of organizing the classroom, individual school, and school system, for the improvement of reading instruction.. Emphasis is given to the development of program organization rationale based on requirements of the teaching-learning setting.
