The major in Special Education is designed for those who plan to teach children and adolescents with disabilities. Upon completion of the M.A.T. program students will be eligible for certification in the areas of mild disabilities.

3033 Nature and Needs of Persons with Mild Disabilities (Fa) A survey of the educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with mild disabilities. Basic issues in identification, assessment, and programming within the public school setting will be reviewed. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.
3043 Nature and Needs of Persons with Mod-erate/Profound Disabilities A survey of the educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with moderate/profound disabilities. Basic issues in identification, assessment, and programming within the public school setting will be reviewed. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.
3053 Nature and Needs of Persons with Serious Emotional Disorders A survey of the educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with serious emotional disorders. Four major categories of behaviors (Personality disorders, conduct disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, and learning/behavior disorders) are reviewed in relationship to identification, assessment, and program intervention within the public school setting. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.
4003 Assessment of Students with Disabilities The use and interpretation of educational/psychological assessment with emphasis on identification of and problems related to assessment of exceptional individuals. The referral process, including case studies and case conferencing, is discussed. Clinical experiences with assessment/evaluation of individuals suspected of learning or behavior problems requiring modification of instructional environment. Prerequisite: CIED 3023, SPED 3033 and SPED 3043 or 3053.
4013 Teaching Mathematics to Students with Exceptionalities Purposes, curriculum, and techniques of teaching mathematics to students with exceptionalities in regular and special classrooms. Prerequisite: CIED 3023, SPED 3033 and 3043 or 3053.
4023 Instructional Design for Teachers Study of the design of instruction for students with exceptionalities. Emphasis is placed on synthesizing a broad range of existing and emerging perspectives and methods of instruction and applying them to practical classroom practices. Prerequisite: CIED 3023, SPED 3033 and 3043 or 3053.
4036 Methods of Teaching Students with Exceptionalities in Elementary and Secondary Schools Reviews the curricula, methods, materials of instruction, and evaluation essential to provide an effective educational program for students with exceptionalities who are in elementary and secondary schools. Special attention directed to the modifications required to integrate students into the regular class program. Prerequisites: CIED 3023, SPED 3033 and 3043 or 3053.
4113 Classroom Management for the Mildly Handicapped (Fa) The use of behavior management principles with exceptional children. Includes behavior theory, shaping, selection of reinforcements, data collection, reinforcement schedules, and extinguishing behavior. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.

Deals with deviations in mental ability, sensory disabilities, speech problems, learning disabilities, orthopedic handicaps and behavioral disorders. Prerequisite: consent.
5013 Nature and Needs of the Mildly Handicapped Educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals who are mildly handicapped with emphasis on educational modifications. Prerequisite: SPED 5003 or consent.
5021L Classroom Management Concepts Laboratory Supervised field experiences in public school settings with elementary, middle, and secondary age students. Classroom Management Concepts for Teachers. Prerequisite: acceptance into special education cohort group. Corequisite, CIED 5022.
5023 Teaching the Mildly Handicapped--Elementary Curriculum, instructional methods and development of materials for mildly handicapped children at the elementary school level. Prerequisite: SPED 5003, 5013.
5031L Curriculum Design Laboratory Supervised experiences in public school settings with elementary, middle, and secondary age students. Taken concurrently with CIED 5032, Curriculum Design Concepts for Teachers. Prerequisite: acceptance into special education cohort group.
5043 Teaching the Mildly Handicapped--Secondary Curriculum, instructional methods, and development of materials for mildly handicapped adolescents at the secondary school level. Prerequisite: SPED 5003, 5013.
5053 Applied Classroom Management An advanced course in managing behaviors in students with exceptionalities. Students are provided with experiences in applying theoretical bases of classroom management through identifying, assessing, graphing, and analyzing behavioral data and implementing management plans. Ethical issues in classroom management are addressed. Prerequisite: acceptance into the M.A.T. program and SPED 5021L, and CIED 5022.
5063 Clinical Practicum Supervised clinical experiences in special education programs in public and private schools and community based settings. Clinical experiences are provided with students who have moderate/profound disabilities, students with mild disabilities, and students with serious emotional disorders. Prerequisite: acceptance into the M.A.T. program.
5073 Internship in Teaching Supervised teaching experiences in special education programs in public and private schools and community-based settings. Students will apply the theory and methodology previously learned in coursework and field experiences in an applied setting with students with moderate/profound disabilities, students with mild disabilities, and students with serious emotional disorders. Prerequisites: acceptance into M.A.T. program and SPED 5013, SPED 5063.
5083 Advanced Methods for Teaching Students with Exceptionalities An advanced course in designing and implementing individualized programs for students with exceptionalities. Students are provided practical experiences in applying learning theories and instructional methodologies developed and observed in previous course work. Prerequisite: acceptance into the M.A.T. program.
5093 Transition Planning for Persons with Exceptionalities This course is to prepare students to plan, evaluate and implement transition programs within both regular and special classrooms at the elementary, middle and secondary school levels. Prerequisite: acceptance into the M.A.T. program.
5103 Nature and Needs of Persons with Moderate/Profound Disabilities This course is a survey of the educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with moderate/profound disabilities. Basic issues in identification, assessment and programming within the public school setting will be reviewed. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.
5203 Nature and Needs of Persons with Serious Emotional Disorders A survey of the educational, psychological, and social characteristics of individuals with serious emotional disorders. 5403 Nature and Needs of the Gifted and Talented Educational, psychological, and social characteristics of gifted and talented children. Prerequisite: graduate standing.
5413 Curriculum Development in Gifted Education (Fa, S) Examines the various models for developing curriculum and providing services for students identified for gifted programs. Prerequisite: SPED 5403 or consent.
5433 Gifted and Talented (Structured) Practicum (Su) Supervised field experience in gifted education programs, schools, institutions, and other facilities for gifted/talented children. Prerequisite: SPED 5413 and consent.
5443 Gifted and Talented (Flex) Practicum (Fa) Students design and implement an individualized practicum experience (Type III Renzulli) that provides the opportunity to refine and enhance personal attitudes, beliefs, and skills in gifted education. Prerequisite: SPED 5433.
