Areas of Concentration: French, German, and Spanish. Supporting courses are offered in Greek and Latin.

Prerequisites to Degree Program: The student must have a B.A. degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with suitable preparation in the chosen foreign language and be accepted by the Department. Deficiencies in undergraduate major or prerequisites for advanced courses may be included in the student's program.

Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree: Aside from deficiencies, a minimum of 36 semester hours of course work is required for the degree. Each candidate must pass a comprehensive examination covering course work and a reading list. Upon admission to this program the candidate will be assigned an adviser who, in consultation with the candidate, will design a suitable program for the candidate. The adviser, in consultation with other members of the Department, will select an examination committee for the comprehensive oral and written examinations. Detailed program descriptions, including reading lists and examination procedures, are available from the Department.

4003 Special Language I (Fa) Under the number, various oriental, African, or other less commonly-taught languages will be offered from year to year. Prerequisite: junior standing or consent.

4013 Special Language II (Sp) Continuation of Special Language I. Prerequisite: FLAN 4003 or equivalent.

4022 Special Language Beginning Conversation (Fa) Two hours of guided conversational practice per week: Pre- or corequisite: FLAN 4003 or equivalent.

4033 Special Language III (Fa) Continuation of Special Language II. Prerequisite: FLAN 4013 or equivalent.

4713 Language and Culture Anthropological ap-proaches to the description and analysis of languages and their extension into ethnographic semantics with emphasis on cognitive models and their sociological correlates. (Same as ANTH 4713 and COMM 4713.) Prerequisite: consent.

4753 The Continental Film (Irregular) The development of modern cinema in France, German, England, Russia, Italy, and other European countries with emphasis on a nation's film history, major directors, principles genres, and trends. May be repeated when content is changed. Maximum credit limited to 6 hours. (Same as COMM 4753.)

5022 Research and Bibliography (Irregular) Provides students with the methods and practice of advanced Foreign Language bibliographical research.

504V Translation Workshop (1-6) (Irregular) Problems of translation and the role of the translator as both scholar and creative writer; involves primarily the discussion in workshop of the translations of poetry, drama, and fiction done by the students, some emphasis upon comparative studies of existing translations of well-known works. Primary material will vary. (Same as ENGL 5043.) Prerequisite: reading knowledge of a foreign language and consent. The basis of consent is demonstrated ability to do the work.

505V Workshop (1-3) (Irregular) Specialized professional problems and topics in foreign language based career areas. Prerequisite: consent. May be taken for maximum of 3 hours.

5063 Teaching Foreign Languages on the College Level (Irregular) Focus on basic methodological concepts and their practical application to college foreign language instruction.

5073 Testing and Evaluation in Second Language Programs (Irregular) Provides students with an understanding of the various types and objectives of testing and evaluation in second language teaching and learning.
