The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program is a 33 semester hour degree program. The M.A.T. degree is the initial teaching certification program for students at the University of Arkansas.

Areas of Concentration for the M.A.T.: agricultural education, childhood education, middle-level education, physical education, secondary education, special education, and vocational education.

Prerequisites to the M.A.T. Degree Program: Students will be selected up to the max-imum number designated for each cohort area of emphasis. Admission requirements for the M.A.T. degree program for initial certification are as follows:

1. Completion of an appropriate undergraduate degree program

2. Cumulative GPA of 2.70 in all previous courses

3. Admission to the Graduate School

4. Admission to Teacher Education Program

5. Completion of the pre-education core with a minimum of "C" in all courses

6. Completion of all prerequisite courses in teaching field

7. Payment of internship fee

Areas of Concentration for the M.Ed.: Candidates who receive the master's degree in secondary education must be eligible, upon completion of the degree requirements, to receive a standard certificate to teach in secondary schools. Areas of concentration are available in art, English, ESL (English as a second language), French, German, Spanish, biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, general science, earth and space science, speech, mathematics, social studies, journalism, or combinations of the above.

Prerequisites to the Master of Education Degree Program

Regular Admission

1. 2.70 grade-point average on all under-graduate courses

2. Submission of a Miller Analogies Test score

3. Graduate School admission and program area approval

Conditional Admission

1. 2.50 grade-point average on all under-graduate courses

2. Miller Analogies Test score of 50 or above

Requirements for the Master of Education Degree: In addition to the program requirements listed below, all degree candidates must hold a valid secondary school teaching certificate and must successfully complete a written comprehensive examination and a second assessment.

Requirements for the Educational Specialist Degree: This program is designed for curriculum and instruction directors, supervisors, department heads, and career teachers interested in secondary curriculum and instruction. Flexibility exists in planning the 60-hour minimum program to take into account the occupational needs and professional aspirations of each student. For instance, the continued study of secondary education may be combined with a component of educational technology, reading, or special education. In addition, each student must complete a research course (EDFD 5013, Introduction to Educational Research, or EDFD 5393, Applied Educational Statistics) and a project, and a minimum of nine graduate hours of cognate courses.

Courses: Secondary Education (SEED)

4443 Cooperative Learning Philosophy, theory, and application of the cooperative learning strategy. Extensive practice in various cooperative learning strategies, development of cooperative lessons, and practice in conducting cooperative learning strategies. Graduate students will be required to complete additional projects and papers.

5033 Innovations in Secondary School Education An examination of the change process in education with emphasis on those elements which support or hinder change in the schools, and a detailed study of secondary school innovations on national, state, and local levels.

5041 Writing Across the Curriculum Practicum Practicum in which students apply theory to practice. Emphasis placed upon actual application of theory to their own writing, methods for transferring the knowledge of theory to classroom application in their curricular area(Su), and curriculum development. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5051 Reading Across the Curriculum Practicum Practicum in which students apply theory to practice. Emphasis placed on actual application of theory to their own reading skills, methods for transferring the knowledge of theory to classroom application in their curricular area(Su), and curriculum development. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5053 Contemporary Issues in Secondary Education A study of issues pertaining to the goals, objectives, organization, and curriculum of the secondary schools with an analysis of the teacher's role in dealing with current concerns in these areas.

5061 The Moral Dimensions of Teaching Explores the moral aspect of the profession of teaching. In particular this course teaches about the value-ladenness of teaching and presents methods to help prospective teachers adequately address moral and value issues. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5073 Special Methods of Instruction I Study of the methods and materials in the special content areas. Includes philosophical, cognitive, and psychological dimensions of teaching the content area. The planning of instruction, micro-teaching, and the development of instructional materials are included. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5113 The Secondary School Curriculum General principles and techniques of selecting and organizing curricular materials.

5123 Analysis of Teaching A survey of the research and literature related to the systematic study of the field of teaching. An examination of the definitions of teaching and the knowledge base on which teaching is predicated. A study of the implications of the research on effective teaching and the key curricular and instructional issues.

5153 Design and Preparation of Curriculum Materials (Fa, Su) Principles and procedures for the selection, development and organization of curriculum materials including learning packages, simulation and gaming, units, courses of study or curriculum guides. Prerequisite: EDFD 5373 or equivalent.

5162 Interdisciplinary Studies Introduction to the nature of interdisciplinary study: curricular content, course planning (topics and themes), instructional strategies, and evaluation and assessment. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5173 Special Methods of Instruction II Study of the methods and materials in the special content areas. Classroom applications of teaching strategies with analysis of teacher effectiveness in seminar settings. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5183 Measurement and Evaluation A study of measurement, testing, and evaluative procedures including types of tests, abuses of tests, test construction, scoring, analysis and interpretation, statistical methods, and alternative evaluation and assessment techniques. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5193 Research in Curriculum and Instruction An introduction to inquiry and research in curriculum and instruction. It examines the principles, strategies, and techniques of research, especially qualitative inquiry. Qualitative methods in assessment and evaluation are considered. A practicum in educational research and evaluation is done as part of the class. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.T. program.

5243 Methods of Middle School Instruction Philosophy, rationale, and instructional practices of middle school instruction. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

5313 Evaluation of Instruction Examination of methods and philosophies of evaluation. Consideration will be given to grading, techniques of grading, and construction of behavioral objectives and test items.

570V Teaching Foreign Cultures in Social Studies Curriculum (3-6) Extensive examination of foreign cultures (West Europe, USSR, China, Latin America) and methods of teaching about them in secondary school social studies. (Same as HIST 560V and PLSC 560V.)

6113 Improvement of Secondary Instruction (Fa, Sp, Su) Principles and concepts of secondary instruction with an emphasis on the models of teaching, conceptual systems theory, the effects of models of teaching, and the art and science of education.

6323 Secondary School Curriculum Planning The organization and implementation of programs in secondary schools for the purposes of curriculum development, revision and accreditation. Prerequisite: SEED 5113 or consent.

6983 Secondary Science Seminar (Fa, Sp, Su) Broaden the perspective of science educators who have the necessary background, knowledge, and skills to become effective professionals in higher education. Emphasis is on current trends in secondary science, issues developing in secondary science, research in science education, philosophy, and history of science education.
