The Silas Hunt Legacy Award Event
On
April 28, 2006, the University honored 10 African Americans through
presentation of the Silas Hunt Legacy Award – an accolade
of the highest esteem that celebrates the pioneering spirit of Silas
Hunt by honoring individuals whose impact on humanity has brought
honor and distinction to the University.
A public nomination
process for the distinguished awards was held in the fall of 2005,
with specific focus on noteworthy UA graduates or those who have
made important contributions to the University through areas such
as government, business, academic, community service, civil rights,
and the arts. A volunteer committee of faculty, students, alumni,
staff, and community leaders selected the honorees.
The memorable occasion
featured an elegant dinner and award ceremony at the Fayetteville
Town Center where co-chairs Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Johnetta Cross Brazzell and Mr. Coleman Peterson, former Executive
Vice-President, Wal-Mart People Division, presented the engraved
awards. A film illustrating the history of African Americans on
the UA campus premiered and Chancellor John A. White offered remarks.
Guests were treated to an uplifting performance by the UA Inspirational
Singers.
The Silas Hunt Legacy
Award ceremony provided an opportunity for the University to demonstrate
its continued commitment to enhancing diversity and building an
inclusive, affirming learning culture by hosting an evening suitable
for these commendable honorees.
Generous corporate support
made the event possible and sponsors are recognized on page 43 of
this book.
