School of Law Diversity Honors & Recognitions
From the entrance of Silas Hunt in the late 1940s,
to contemporary honors and recognitions, the University of Arkansas
School of Law has demonstrated its commitment to embracing diversity.
The School of Law is included among the “most
diverse law schools in the country” as ranked by U.S. News
and World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools”
2006 and 2007 editions. According to the 2007 report, the School
of Law has the fifth highest percent of black students of all U.S.
law schools.
In 2004, the Law School hosted an event honoring
the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education with a conference.
Jim Miller, associate dean for students, was given
the Henry J. Ramsey Jr. Diversity Award for 2005 by the American
Bar Association’s Student Law Division.
The Law School and the American Bar Association Law
Student Division hosted “Corporate Law and Diversity”
sessions with speakers from Tyson Foods Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s William H.
Bowen School of Law.
The Wal-Mart Legal Diversity Scholarship was established
in 2004 to promote diversity in the legal community by providing
aid to students of diverse backgrounds.
In 2004, The National Jurist magazine reported that
the School of Law ranked 13th out of 172 in the nation in success
in improving gender and ethnic diversity over a 10-year period.
Loislaw.com Inc., which provides legal research materials
via a Web browser, established a scholarship for minority law students.
Law School’s annual welcome address has been
given by Judge Wendell Griffen (JD ’79), the first man of
color to work in a major Arkansas law firm.
