Letter from the Chancellor
April
28, 2006 was an important milestone in the life of the University
of Arkansas. That evening, the University inaugurated the Silas
Hunt Legacy Award Celebration, which recognized ten outstanding
African Americans who have made a lasting, positive difference in
the world. Their remarkable accomplishments reflect the immeasurable
contributions of the entire African American community to the University,
the State of Arkansas, and far beyond.
In these pages, you will find photos from our special
night, biographies of the Silas Hunt Legacy Award honorees, and
a glimpse into the rich history of the African American community
at the University of Arkansas. This history is still being written,
and the Silas Hunt Legacy Award Celebration is only the beginning
of our ongoing recognition of the significant contributions of the
African American community to the University.
On February 2, 1948, Silas Hunt was admitted to the
School of Law. His strength and conviction inspired generations
of remarkable African Americans to accomplish great things, and
he forever changed the University of Arkansas for the better. Every
one of us who has been touched by the University owes a tremendous
debt of gratitude to Silas Hunt for starting us down the path to
a diverse, welcoming, University of Arkansas.
We have made great strides in the past 58 years,
but for the University of Arkansas to reach its full potential as
a center of learning, teaching, and research, it must more fully
welcome and foster diverse cultures, thoughts, and viewpoints. We
are absolutely committed to enhancing the diversity of our faculty,
staff, and students, and we will remain so. We will continue to
honor the remarkable legacy of Silas Hunt by doing all we can to
make the University of Arkansas a welcoming, inclusive community.
I invite you to read on and join us as the University
of Arkansas celebrates the diverse viewpoints, thoughts, and –
most importantly – people that make us a nationally competitive,
student-centered research university serving Arkansas and the world.
