Rollin' with Nolan
Rollin’ with Nolan
In
1986, Nolan Richardson became the head coach of the University of
Arkansas basketball team. He was the first black head coach in either
basketball or football at the U of A and in the Southwest Conference
(of which the U of A was a member at the time). He quickly gained
national attention for the uptempo game that employed a full-pressure
defense, nicknamed by Richardson as “40 Minutes of Hell.”
He also brought some levity to the basketball court with his unique
sense of style, sporting cowboy boots and signature polka dot shirt.
Under Richardson’s leadership, the Hogs went
to the NCAA Final Four three times and won the National Championship
in 1994. The Hogs returned to the finals the following year but
lost to UCLA. He was named the national coach of the year in 1994.
He is the only head coach to win a junior college championship,
the National Invitational Tournament, and the NCAA tournament.
Richardson was head coach of the Razorbacks from
1985-2002.
