Karen Hodges is Director of Remediation and Retention for Fulbright College and the interim Director of Admissions. As Admissions Director, she coordinates an excellent staff dedicated to the recruitment of a diverse and growing population of incoming students.
Prior to rejoining the University of Arkansas in 2006, Karen served in various capacities at NorthWest Arkansas Community College, including Vice President for Learning from 1995-2005. In addition to her current positions at the University, she has been a visiting assistant professor of English, academic coordinator for Student Support Services and Upward Bound, and coordinator of the University’s Writing Center. Karen has also taught at Old Dominion University (VA) and the University of North Carolina – Charlotte.
Karen's professional and community service have included serving on the board of the Arkansas Humanities Council (1998-2004), serving on the community advisory councils for the Benton and Washington County Single Parent Scholarship Funds (1999-present), setting up a mathematics and chemistry peer tutoring program for Fayetteville High School students, serving as a current member of the Arkansas Higher Education Task Force on Remediation, Retention, and Graduation, and participating in the Northwest Arkansas Academic Competition in Education as a quizmaster.
Karen received her B.A. in English from Pfeiffer College(N.C.) and her master’s and Ph.D. in English from the University of Arkansas. She has earned several awards for teaching and service to her profession and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa for her academic achievements.
Her daughter, Gwyneth, is assistant circulation manager for the Fayetteville Public Library, and her son, Sid, is a professor of cognitive psychology at Northwestern University.
