The University of Arkansas plant evaluation program was initiated in 1999 with the purpose of evaluating new or underutilized ornamental plants on a statewide basis.
The program is unique among university programs in that it includes multiple sites that represent three USDA cold hardiness zones. The program also differs from many other programs in that it uses more than one plant at each test site and collects quantitative data in addition to standard qualitative observations. Information collected from this program will be invaluable in selecting and marketing ornamental plants adaptable to Arkansas.
The program utilizes three different test sites. These sites include: the Hope Research Center (USDA cold hardiness zone 8a), the Little Rock/Cammack property (zone 7a), and the Fayetteville Horticulture Research farm (zone 6 b).

The following is a list of possible nursery sources for plants evaluated in the program. No endorsement is implied, or discrimination intended, for firms or references included or excluded from this list.
A brief subjective summary of each plant is included (preceding each plant name).
CJ= cannot judge due to insufficient information or other reasons
1 = Plant has performed well statewide
2 = Plant has performed well in zones 7a and 8.
3 = Plant performed fair statewide
4 = Plant performed fair zones 7a & 8
5 = Plant not recommended
6 = Plant performed well in 6b, poor in 7a & 8
cj = cannot judge
