GROWTH HABIT, RATE: ADAPTABILITY:
Oval-rounded, deciduous shrub growing to 10 feet slowly. Suckers and
forms colonies.
ADAPTABILITY:
Does well in wet soils. high pH causes chlorosis. Full sun or partial
shade.
FUNCTIONS:
Border, screen, massing, stream banks (does well next to water).
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Need to plant both sexes for fruiting to occur. Also need to pay attention to
bloom time as not all cultivars flower at teh same time. Leaf spots and mildew.
NATIVE RANGE:
Eastern and central United States, Arkansas native plant
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 4-9
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
'Winter Red'- a superior female cultivar, abundant red fruit persists through
winter. Dark green foliage.
'Winter Gold'- a yellow-fruited branch sport of 'Winter Red'.
Also crosses between I. serrata x I. verticillata,
display hybrid vigor; 'Sparkleberry' and 'Apollo' are female and male selections
respectively.
