GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Open habit, stiff, thorny branches, medium to fast growth to 8 feet.
ADAPTABILITY:
Full sun for best fruiting, acidic soils, protect from winter winds.
FUNCTIONS:
Border, wall shrub (espalier), foundation, hedge.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Foliage will scorch (turn brown) in winter in exposed situations. In northern
areas, site away from winter winds. Fireblight (bacterial) and scab (fungal,
disfigures fruit) diseases can be a problem.
NATIVE RANGE:
Southern Europe to western Asia.
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 5b-9a
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS: 'Kasan'- compact, cold hardy. 'Lalandei'-
2-3 m, cold hardy selection, quite an old cultivar.
