GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Twiggy dense shrub, more horizontal than tall.
ADAPTABILITY:
Moist, well-drained acidic soil; in some high pH soil areas may require raised
beds and specially prepared soil.
FUNCTIONS:
Specimen, border, foundation, naturalizing.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Site carefully in northern areas. High pH soils cause chlorois (foliage yellows).
Reduce water so plants harden off properly in fall. Scale and mite can be problems,
especially in dry areas.
NATIVE RANGE:
Hybrid: R. kaempferi x R. kiusianum, other species
may be present too.
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 6-8
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS: Cultivars are listed in the 'Kurume' section
of Rhododendron hybrids in Dirr. This sheet refers to the small-leaf Rhododendron
types commonly considered to be evergreen Azaleas. R. x obtusum
is also called the Hiryu Azalea.
