GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Final shape depends on cultivar, the species is an erect, narrow conical tree.
ADAPTABILITY:
Open sunny locations, air pollution tolerant, pH adaptable. Tolerant of dry
soils.
FUNCTIONS:
Screen, specimen, massing, groundcover.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Bagworms, mites, fungal blight. Prune by cutting back branches, not shearing.
Consider final size of plant, so plant does not outgrow site.

SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
A tremendous number of cultivars have been selected, see Dirr. Some of the more
common cultivars, e.g. 'Pfitzeriana' and 'Hetzii' are now considered to be J.
x media types. J. chinensis var. sargentii (or J.
sargentii) resists juniper blight and is low growing.
