GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Dense, pyramidal- culitvars are globular, narrow or upright.
ADAPTABILITY:
Full sun, moist well-drained soils. Tolerates limestone.
FUNCTIONS:
Specimen, accent, massing, screen.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Bagworms, juniper blight, spider mites, scorch (physiological condition prevalent
in winter in exposed sites), ice storm damage (especially on multiple trunked
specimens).
NATIVE RANGE:
Northeastern North America south to North Carolina; western United States, Alaska
to California
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 3-7
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
'Techy,' 'Nigra,' and 'Emerald'- all selected because they retain their green
color in the winter. These are
examples of Thuja occidentalis, eastern arborvitae. 'Giant Giant' is
a selection of western arborvitae,
Thuja plicata.
