GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Pyramidal habit, horizontal to drooping branches.
ADAPTABILITY:
Moist well-drained, acid soils; more tolerant of lime than other evergreens.
Tolerates shade. Will grow in full sun if soil is prepared correctly and not
subject to drying winds. Requires good drainage, not pollution tolerant.
FUNCTIONS:
Screen, specimen, hedge.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Sunscorch and drought, especially in exposed locations. Woolly adelgid is an
introduced aphid-like pest that is destroying native hemlock stands in the northeast
United States.
