GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Dense, rounded shrub, broader than tall, thorny, to 6 feet.
ADAPTABILITY:
Withstands dry conditions, does not like moist soils. Full sun. Pollution tolerant.
FUNCTIONS:
Hedge, border, specimen.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
None serious except rust as noted on some cultivars of the var. atropurpurea.
Some clones are susceptible to black stem rust of wheat (alternate host) and
cannot be grown in wheat-growing areas. Spiny stems trap trash and plants often
need cleaning. Invasive in northeastern United States.
