GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Loosely pyramidal in habit, lower branches arch out and down. Fast grower, especially
when young
ADAPTABILITY:
Does best in moist, well-drained soil. Not drought tolerant. Prefers full sun
but will grow with part-day shade.
FUNCTIONS:
Specimen, shrub border, functions best where flowers can be observed against
a dark background. Can be trained
as a small tree.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Will require irrigation during dry spells. No serious insect or disease problems
in Arkansas, canker is limiting use
in Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. In exposed situations, leaf tatter due to
wind.
