GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Usually a rounded shrub, does not branch very much. Fast grower.
ADAPTABILITY:
Moist, well-drained soil, salt tolerant. Requires shade in warmer zones, also
adequate water.
FUNCTIONS:
Shrub border, specimen, accent plant (especially variegated cultivars).
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Prune immediately after flowering, flower buds form on previous season's growth.
Winterkill in colder climates eliminates flowers. pH determines flower color:
ph below 5.5 yields blue flowers and pH above 6.5 yields pink flowers.
NATIVE RANGE:
Japan
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zone 6-9
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
Two distinct groups, the 'lacecaps' and 'hortensia' types. Many cultivars in
each group. 'Mariesii Variegata'- a 'lacecap', leaves edged with white.
