Physocarpus opulifolius (L.) Maxim.
 
Common Ninebark

Flowers: Pink/white flowers in small clusters along the stem, noticeable but not overwhelming in mid May. A superficial resemblance to Spiraea x vanhouttei.

Foliage: Dark green, except yellow in some cultivars. Purple fall color occasionally.

Fruit: Attractive reddish follicles in fall.

Trunk, Branching, Twigs: Bark smooth when young, exfoliates on older stems.

 

Location: At the north end of the garden adjacent to Maple Street, by the Plant Sciences Building.
