GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Upright, columnar, large shrub or small tree, suckering to form a colony. Medium
to fast growth rate.
ADAPTABILITY:
Full sun to part shade, in moist well drained soil with high organic material.
FUNCTIONS:
Naturalizing, shrub border, specimen.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Not particularly suited for tough urban situations. Fire blight in some years.
Leaf spot may cause early defoliation.
NATIVE RANGE:
Eastern United States and Canada Amelanchier arborea is an Arkansas
native plant.
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 3-9
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
Amelanchier taxonomy and identification is confusing and in most cases
uncertain. There is a good list of cultivars in Dirr.
Many of the currently available Serviceberry trees are A. x grandiflora.
Some species (e.g. A. alnifolia) are cultivated
for fruit production.
