GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
A large, narrow upright tree, coarse texture, fast growth rate.
ADAPTABILITY:
Prefers rich, moist, well drained soil in full sun. Adaptable to soil, pH, and
temperature.
FUNCTIONS:
Shade or specimen tree, best in large areas like parks or golf courses.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Pods are a litter problem. Catalpa worms can defoliate trees but these caterpillars
make a good fish bait.
NATIVE RANGE: East-central United States, Arkansas native plant

SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS: A very closely related species is Catalpa
bignonioides (Southern Catalpa) It flowers later than C. speciosa
and is usually a more rounded tree. Foliage is ill-smelling when crushed.
