Flowers: Pendulous male catkins in late winter are subtly attractive. Monoecious.
Foliage: Leaves are medium green in color, medium texture. Leathery appearance, no fall color.
Fruit: Edible nuts are surrounded by a fringed involucre.
Trunk, Branching, Twigs: Twigs are corky and fissured when young.
Location: Horticulture Research Farm, off Garland.
