GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Oval to rounded crown, wide-spreading. Shorter than black walnut. Slow growing,
coarse texture.
ADAPTABILITY:
Grows best in rich, moist well drained soil; tolerates drier soil but grows
slower. More cold-hardy than black walnut.
FUNCTIONS:
Shade tree, nut production.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Nuts are a litter problem, shouldn't use in heavily trafficked areas. Becoming
rare in nature due to a canker disease that kills the tree.
