GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Pyramidal in shape when young, becoming oval to broad-rounded when old, medium
to fast growth rate.
ADAPTABILITY:
Prefers moist, well-drained loam, does well in limestone based soils, not tolerant
of drought or wet sites. Not pollution tolerant.
FUNCTIONS:
Shade tree, needs lots of room.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Litter from large leaves, difficult to transplant due to limited, fleshy root
system.
NATIVE RANGE:
East-central United States and adjacent Ontario.
