GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Rapid grower, becoming a massive tree with wide spreading branches and an irregular
habit.
ADAPTABILITY:
Tolerant of city conditions, moist soils are best but adaptable to pH and pollution.
FUNCTIONS:
Shade tree, street tree, specimen.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Anthracnose in spring in most years, normally not fatal but is unsightly. A
messy tree, always dropping bark, twigs, seeds, leaves over the course of the
year.

SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
Also common in the landscape is the London Plane Tree (P. orientalis
x P. occidentalis). This hybrid is more
resistant to anthracnose than P. occidentalis but suffers from cankerstain.
