Seasonal Interest and Photographs

Quercus shumardii

Shumard Oak

Flowers: Monoecious, pale, green-yellowish catkins in early to mid spring.

Foliage: Deep green, bristly lobed, yellow to brown fall color.

Fruit: Large acorn, cap covers top quarter of acorn.

NOTE: Identification of Q. palustris, Q. rubra and Q. shumardii can be difficult. Focus in on the buds, and acorn. The leaves of these three species are so variable to make leaf shape not a good identification clue.

Location: In front of the Fulbright fountain
