2008-09-23 11:19  NEWS: UARK Password Expiration Reminder

In light of the many phishing attacks targeted at our campus during the beginning of this semester, University Information Technology Services wishes to remind users that we DO send out UARK password expiration notices.

Please remember that the University will NEVER send a message to our users asking for  account passwords, and we will NEVER ask you to respond to an email with your password.

Passwords are set to expire every 120 days. The University's password expiration policy is a requirement of Arkansas state security regulations. Once a password has been used for ninety days, a "friendly" warning message is sent to the user's primary UARK account (as well as sponsored or service accounts where applicable).  If the password reaches an age of 109 days, the user will be sent a series of "nagging" type emails (one per day) for ten days.  If a passwords ages to 119 days, a *final* notice is sent.  If the password reaches 120 days unchanged, the account is locked.

To have a password renewed after it has been locked, students will need to go to the registrar's office, and faculty and staff to the UITS Help Desk.

Please contact the UITS Help Desk at 575-2905 if you have questions or concerns about the legitimacy of these notices or any email you receive regarding accounts and passwords.

2008-09-23 10:12  REMINDER: Alias comp.uark.edu discontinued

This notice *only* applies to uark.edu users who still use/receive email under the alias username@comp.uark.edu.  The email alias ending with comp.uark.edu were discontinued on September 30, 2008.

2008-09-02 11:09  NEWS: Email alias change for users@comp.uark.edu

University IT Services will no longer support the use of the email alias username@comp.uark.edu.  When username@uark.edu became the official UARK email address, IT Services allowed messages sent to username@comp.uark.edu to be forwarded to username@uark.edu.  Now that this migration is complete, ALL messages sent to username@comp.uark.edu will be "bounced" back to the sender.

If you have questions, or are still using the alias username@comp.uark.edu, please read the complete news release at the UITSNews Archive.

2008-08-22 11:26  NEWS: Phishing Notice

On Friday, August 22, a new round of phishing scam messages has targeted the University of Arkansas email accounts.  These scams claimed to originate
from University Police and indicated that the recipient's account would be closed due to a system error.  Further, the message asked users to reply
with their email address and password.

University IT Services and University Police are advising the University campus to ignore this fraudulent message.  The University administration
will _NEVER_ send a notice to our email clients requesting that you send us your password.  Please protect your account password just as you would do
your banking account numbers or any other form of private or sensitive information.

Users are urged to ignore the message or any similar fraudulent message. However, users that have replied to the message should immediately change
their password using PASSweb ( http://www.uark.edu/passweb ) to prevent unauthorized access to their account.

Again, the University WILL NOT send messages requesting user account passwords or other personal information to be communicated via email.  For
questions, comments, or concerns, please contact the UITS Help Desk at 575-2905, or email the IT Security Group at security@uark.edu.

2008-08-18 08:34  NEWS: UARK Policy Regarding Student Accounts

University IT Services will no longer delete old student UARK Accounts at the beginning of the semester. This new policy is intended to ensure students have time to obtain an alternative email account, allow continued communication with University contacts, as well as collect information from other UARK accounts.

Under the previous policy, graduates and non-enrolled students lost their UARK accounts 11 days after the beginning of the new semester.  The new policy allows these old accounts to be held open until the following Spring semester or later.

Please watch for updates regarding this policy change.  If you have questions, please contact the University IT Help Desk at 575-2905.

2008-07-28 03:31  Fraudulent Email Messages Sent to University Campus

Over the past weekend, international hackers have been sending fraudulent email purporting to originate from the University of Arkansas administration.  The message in the fraudulent email indicates that the user could lose access to email or ISIS accounts unless the account password and other private information is submitted via email. This type of message preys on unsuspecting users who believe the message is legitimate.

As a reminder, the University will _NEVER_ send a message which requests private information in this manner.
