Revised for spring 2005
CSES 3214: Soil Resources and Nutrient Cycles (previously Intermediate Soil Science–now offered in spring semesters)
Catalog description: CSES 3214 Soil Resources and Nutrient Cycles (SP) Integration of the fundamental concepts of the biological, chemical and physical properties of soil systems and their roles in managing soil resources. Lecture 3 hours, laboratory 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: CSES 2203. Co-requisite: 3210L.
CSES 3210L: Soil Resources and Nutrient Cycles Laboratory
Catalog description: CSES 3210L Soil Resources and Nutrient Cycles Laboratory (SP) Laboratory will be used to develop skills associated with the fundamental concepts of the biological, chemical and physical properties of soil systems. Laboratory 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: CSES 2203. Co-requisite: CSES 3214.
New for fall 2004
CSES 3223: Ecosystems Assessment
Catalog description: ENSC 3223 Ecosystems Assessment: (FA, even)Application of ecological principles for ESWS majors and college students interested in environmental science. Applications of the basic ecological principles of organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems to gain an appreciation for how large scale patterns in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are influenced by small scale interactions among individuals (microorganisms to invertebrate macrofauna) and between individuals and their local environment. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Pre-requisites:  BIOL 1543 Principles of  Biology, CSES 2203 Soil Science. Pre-requisite or co-requisite:  CSES 3003 Introduction to Water Science. Co-requisite:  ENSC 3221L Ecosystems Assessment Laboratory.
CSES 3221L: Ecosystems Assessment Laboratory
Catalog description: ENSC 3221L Ecosystems Assessment Laboratory: (FA, even)  The purpose of this laboratory is to complement concepts learned in lecture by carrying out experiments that familiarize students with methods used in soil and aquatic ecology. Students will collect samples, analyze and interpret data obtained from soil and water samples. Lab will meet once per week for 3 hours. Pre-requisites:  BIOL 1543 Principles of  Biology, CSES 2203 Soil Science. Pre-requisite or co-requisite:  CSES 3003 Introduction to Water Science. Co-requisite:  ENSC 3223 Ecosystems Assessment.
Coming attraction: New for spring 2005!
ENSC 4034: Analysis of Environmental Contaminants
Catalog description: ENSC 4034 Analysis of Environmental Contaminants (SP, odd) Methods of analysis for inorganic and organic contaminants in soil and water.  Quality assurance and quality control, sampling protocols, sample handling, instrumentation and data analysis.  Lecture 2 hour and laboratory 4 hours per week.  Prerequisites: CSES 2203 Soil Science and ENSC 3003 Introduction to Water Science.
Irregular offering (Special Topics)
CSES 402: Special Topics - Microbial Ecology
Course description:  CSES 402 Special Topics, Microbial Ecology (FA, odd) This course will focus on contemporary relationships and issues of microbial ecology in soils, sediments and aquatic environments. Areas to be covered will include the following: microbial interactions, adaptations to environments, quantification, microbes in waste management, biodegradation of pollutants, and/or ecological control of pests.
