Arkansas Agricultural Research & Extension Center (AAREC)

The Center is located two miles north of the campus of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. This station was known as the Main Agricultural Experiment Station until 1996 when it was named the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The Center is partitioned into areas that are administered by departments of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, which are also academic departments in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural,Food, and Life Sciences. This provides a strong linkage between teaching, research and extension in the College and Experiment Station. Departments of Animal Science; Biological and Agricultural Engineering; Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences; Entomology; Food Science; Horticulture; Plant Pathology; and Poultry Science conduct field and laboratory research at the Center. Washington County Cooperative Extension Service, the BioMass Research Center and the Arkansas Archeological Survey are also located on the Center.

Of the 725 acres on both sides of State Highway 112, approximately 70% is in research and 30% in roads, grounds and buildings. The Center is located on the Springfield Plateau (36:05:46.8N, 94:10:28.5W NAD83, 1294 ft NAVD88), with rolling hills to moderately level land. The soil is predominantly a silt loam with 17 soil series represented. The Captina silt loam is predominant. The soils are moderately to well drained and slowly permeable with 1 to 5% slopes. The climate is humid sub-tropical (more climate information).

Over 100 Faculty/ extension personnel, research specialists/associates, and technicians work at the Center. Graduate assistants from each department, working with their major professor, have numerous and varied research projects that are conducted on the center.
