Bruker Reflex III MALDI-TOF
This instrument accepts solid samples,
either within a suitable uv-absorbing matrix or, in some cases directly
deposited from solution. For laser desorption, it is equipped with both
a pulsed nitrogen laser operating at 337 nm and a Nd-YAG laser, which can
be operated at several wavelengths. For analysis, samples are deposited
upon a sample magazine, which has the dimensions of a standard 96-well
plate and which is indexed with 384 computer-addressable sample locations.
For analysis, both linear and reflectron time-of-flight mass analysis are
available, with the former preferred if maximum sensitivity is required,
while the reflectron mode is used for maximum mass spectral resolution
and MS/MS applications. To assist in situations where a large number of
similar samples are to be analyzed, this instrument is also equipped with
a MAP II robot system which can be used to prepare samples onto the sample
magazine. Mass spectrometer operations and data analysis are under control
of a Sun computer, and robotics operations are controlled by an NT computer.

Bruker Esquire-LC Ion Trap LC/MS
This is a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer,
equipped with an electrospray ionization source and interfaced with a Hewlett
Packard 1100 high-performance liquid chromatograph. Samples can be introduced
directly from the liquid chromatograph or in solution through a sample
infusion interface. The instrument has a mass range of 20 to 2000 m/z when
scanning at 13,000 amu per second with unit mass resolution. In its high
resolution mode, the same mass range is scanned at 500 amu per second,
with 0.2 amu full peak width at half maximum resolving power. A high mass
mode provides a mass range of 200-6000 m/z. This instrument's operations
and data analysis are controlled by a Hewlett Packard NT computer.

IonSpec 9.4 Tesla Ultima Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer
This instrument is a 9.4 Tesla actively shielded Fourier transform mass spectrometer equipped with both electrospray and MALDI ion sources. It provides resolving power in excess of 500,000 in either ESI or MALDI modes of operation. Mass measurement accuracies in the low ppm range is obtained for either electrospray or laser desorption measurements.

Off-line Data Processing
For the convenience of facility users,
and to insure that the mass spectrometers are free for sample data acquisition,
the laboratory maintains two 500 MHz NT computers for off-line data processing.
Full analysis software packages for both the MALDI-TOF and Esquire-LC instruments
is available, allowing offline data processing, spectral plotting, and
printing. The computers are equipped with JAZ drives capable of reading
2 gigabyte JAZ tapes, so it is possible for users to maintain complete
archival records of their personal data.
