Topic: SLAVERY DURING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
Grade: Ninth through Twelfth
Time: 1-3 class periods.
Arkansas History Guidelines: 1.1.10, 1.1.11, 1.1.12, 1.1.13
Introduction: The instructor will lead the students in a discussion of slavery. Site specific examples from movies the students may have seen, such as "Roots", "Armistad", "The Blue and the Gray", and "The Color Purple". Ask the students to the daily life of a slave during the time period in question. Ask the students to describe the daily activities a slave during the nineteenth century.
Objective: Students will describe the daily lives of slaves on a plantation.

The instructor will lead the students in researching the life of a slave during the nineteenth century. This will include the work and leisure activities time activities of a slave. The students will research slavery using a variety of resources. These shall include the books Slavery in the American South by Dr. Jeannie M. Whayne , Negro Slavery in Arkansas by Orville W. Taylor, and Arkansas, 1800-1860 by S. Charles Bolton.
They will also access the Internet sites "Introduction to Colonial African-American Life" www.history.org/search/index.asp?src=, "North American Slave Narratives" http://metalab.unc.edu/docsouth/neh/neh.html, and "Slave Narratives" http://vi.uh.edu/pages/mintz/primary.htm.
Activities: The students will write a narrative essay taking on the persona of a slave during the nineteenth century. The essay will include a description of various activities the slave takes part in during a typical day.
