Objective: To introduce a 1930's baseball player to the class, so they can see how far a person can come from simple beginnings, and so to see if they can see the difference between baseball of the '30s and baseball of today.

Set: Read a story about Dizzy Dean, and watch the classic black and white movie about him. (This will also show the students that all good movies do not have to be in color.) After reading all of his stats, have students see how many they can remember.  Then see how many differences they can identify between baseball of the past and present.

Materials: Movie:Dizzy Dean. Baseball Stats off of Dizzy Dean's website.
State Map to locate Lucas, Ar. (Dizzy Dean's birthplace).

Key Terms: Stats, fireballer, Gashouse Gang, The National League, Batting average, Broadcasting Career, Baseball Hall of Fame, The Saint Louis Cardinals, pitcher.

Key Facts: Born January 16, 1910. Died July 17, 1974. Winner of 4 National League Strikeout Crowns.  The last National League pitcher to record 30 wins. Career cut short due to a broken toe.  Elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1953.

Activities: Read a book and watch the movie about Dizzy Dean.
Have a class discussion about any changes the students can notice about the past and present.
Have them locate Lucus, Ar. on the state map.
Talk about baseball and its influence in Arkansas and America.

Closure: Have the students write down as many facts as they can remember from the movie.

Assessment: Have the students write about what they thought of the movie and Dizzy Dean.
