Objective: Students will be able to identify the six regions of Arkansas.
Students will be able to label the six regions of Arkansas on a state map of Arkansas.

Set:  Begin the class period by discussing the different places within the U.S. that the students may know about,
for example, a student may know someone that lives in the Rocky Mountains, or on the East or West Coast. 
This discussion prepares the students for the lesson on the regions of Arkansas.

Materials: §  Large map of the six regions of Arkansas
§       Arkansas maps with the six regions outlined (11 X 8 tagboard) one per student
§       Various types of candy: Oreo O's cereal, Apple Jacks Cereal, Orange Crème Savers slices, Chocolate
         Chips, M & M 's, Green Tic Tacs (Using candy that starts with the same letter as the region is easier for
          students to remember)
§       Glue

Key Facts: §  A region is a large area with the same features that keep it separate from other areas.
§       Arkansas is made up of six regions.
1.      Ozark Mountains
2.      Arkansas River Valley
3.      Ouachita Mountains
4.      Coastal Plain
5.      Mississippi Plain
6.      Crowley's Ridge
§       The six regions are divided into the highland and lowland regions.
§       Highland Regions include:
1.      Ozark Mountains
2.      Arkansas River Valley
3.      Ouachita Mountains
§       Lowland Regions include:
1.      Coastal Plain
2.      Mississippi Plain
3.      Crowley's Ridg

Activities: 1.  Short Lesson of the different regions using visual aid to reinforce lesson
2.      Students will use candy to identify the six regions on a map
3.      Each student will need one map of Arkansas with the regions drawn out.
4.      Students will be given glue and the various types of candy listed above.
5.      Place a sticky note on the large map telling students the type of candy to be used for each region. (Hint: the candy begins          with the same letter as the region)
6.      Students will glue appropriate candy to corresponding region

Closure: Students will write a friendly letter to someone in a different region.  They will discuss in their letter the regions that were taught in class.

Assessment: After completion students will be able to self check their maps with the pre made teacher map.
