Objective: Students will be able to identify key events and participants in the Central High Crisis

Set: The students will be shown pictures of the events at Central High.  Students will be asked to explain what is taking place in the pictures.  The pictures will then be explained to the students

Materials: Textbook: Arkansas History for Young People

Key Terms: Segregation, segregationists, desegregation, integration, racism, lynching, Orville Faubus, Virgil Blossom, Little Rock Nine, Daisy Bates, Dwight Eisenhower, 101st Airborne Division, separate but equal

Key Facts: 1. Brown vs. Board of Education overturned segregation
                  2.  Little Rock Superintendent began a plan that would integrate Little Rock schools over an unspecified time period
                  3. Nine black students chosen to begin attending Central High
                  4. Sept. 1 Faubus calls in National Guard, school did not start.
                  5. Sept 4 8 of the 9 went to class.
                  6.  Eisenhower sent in 101st because LR police could not protect black students
                  7. Complete integration did not occur until 1970's

Activities: Students make notes during lecture, define terms.

Closure: Read excerpt of writting by Elizabeth Eckford out of textbook on pages 358-359.  Have students discuss how they would have reacted if they had been Elizabeth, then discuss what they would have done to help Elizabeth.

Assessment: Material will be included on unit test.
