Objective: The student will be able to find and identify geographical facts
about Arkansas
using reference books and technology. The student will select facts that
are records in the state of Arkansas such as
largest city, smallest city, highest mountain, or lowest
elevation.
Set: We will begin by showing and discussing the Guiness Book of World
Records, using specific examples from the book concerning a different
state. We will also look up a state in the encyclopedia and discuss the
information given about population and other geographical items. We will
identify the city with the biggest population and smallest population.
Using the internet, we will visit the state site on Yahooligans and find another
example.
Materials: Almanac, Guiness Book of World Records, World Book Encyclopedia,
computer with internet access, notecards and ring for each student
Key Terms: almanac, elevation, superlative
Key Facts: The almanac is book of recorded facts.
To look up a state in the encyclopedia, use the first letter of the state's
name.
When we speak of geographical records, we are referring to information
regarding the largest, smallest, longest, shortest, highest, lowest, etc.
measurement of a specific place or landform.
Research involves searching for information and recording the results for
use at a later time.
Activities: Using the Guiness Book of World Records, discuss several
interesting items found in it regarding geographical records. The class
will brainstorm other geographical measurements that they could find out about
Arkansas. The teacher will model how to find the largest city and smallest
city in the state using the encyclopedia or almanac and how to record the
information on a notecard. The resource used and page number must also be
recorded on the card.
Students will be divided into groups of 2-3 to work together on gathering
10 geographical facts/records about Arkansas. The goal will be for each
group to find and record 2 facts/records a day.
Closure: By the 6th class period, each group should have 10 records to
prepare for a group book. The teacher will check the notecards for
accuracy and discuss any inaccuracies that may need to be pointed out to the
student work group.
Student will be given 2 more class periods to complete the performance
assessment.
Assessment: Each student will design a book of Arkansas Geographical
Records. Each record has to be written and illustrated in color. A
rubric will be used to grade the books.
