Objective: The student will identify and describe the major causes and effects of change in the lives of the Arkansas Indian Culture during the Mississippian Tradition

Set: Have you ever thought about how technology has changed your lives?  How many of you would have a hard time doing your math homework without your calculator?  Or, Computers ­ how many of you rely on your computers and the internet to complete your assignments or ­ even ­ just for fun ­ surfing the net or chatting?
        How have these technological advances altered your lives?  Discuss both the positive and negative effects on their lives due to the advancement of technology.

Materials: Arkansas History Textbook

Key Terms: A.D., public buildings, religious practices, plaza, moats, agricultural society,

Key Facts: *The use of earthen/wooden walls and moats for protection
        *The invention of the bow and arrow for protection/warfare/hunting
        *The growing of corn (positive and negative)
        *Improved pottery (mixing with crushed shells)
        *The beginnings of economy

Activities: The students after a discussion will list the technological advances during the Mississippian Tradition and discuss their positive and/or negative effects on the lives of the people.

Closure: Later as a group discuss the effects on the people of the Mississippian Tradition.

Assessment: Check to make sure the student has identified the requested criteria and discussed the effects of each.
