Subject: GERALD M. PHILLIPS AWARD
I am proud to announce the introduction of the GERALD M.
PHILLIPS AWARD FOR DISTINQUISHED APPLIED COMMUNICATION
SCHOLARSHIP. This award, which has been planned for several
years, was recently approved by the Speech Communiation
Association, following closely Professor Phillips' premature
retirement and well-deserved appointment as Professor-
Emeritus of Speech Communication at Penn State University.
The award is designed to recognize and reward the production
and dissemination of communication research and creative
scholarship that demonstrates the value of communication
knowledge by addressing significant social issues, which is
epitomized by Professor Phillips' prolific program of
research and publication conducted to enhance public,
interpersonal, group, organizational, educational, and
health communication.
To begin offering this award a minimum financial endowment
of $5,000 must be established. The Speech Communication
Association has graciously agreed to match the first $2,500
of donations to the endowment to initiate the award. I
proudly kick-off fund raising for this award with my
personal donation of $350. My friend and respected
colleague, Dr. Buddy Goodall, has agreed to match my $350
donation. The authors and editors of five of the first ten
books being published by the SCA Applied Communication
Publication Series (Dennis Gouran, Sandra Herndon, Dan
O'Hair, Lynne Kelly, Gary Kreps, Scott Kuehn, Gerald
Phillips, and Julia Wood) have generously agreed to donate
the royalties from their books to the award endowment (to
provide continuing financial support for the award). I
encourage you to also support this award by sending a tax-
deductible check or moneyorder made out to the "SCA-PHILLIPS
AWARD" to the: Speech Communication Association, Attention:
Dr. Jim Gaudino, Ececutive Director; 5105 Backlick Road, #
E; Annandale, Virginia 22003.
Thank you in advance for your generous support for this
important award. I am hopeful that the award will promote
the institutional legitimacy of applied communication
scholarship, illustrate the value of applied communication
research, and honor the many contributions of Professor
Phillips to the advancement of communication knowledge. If
you have any questions or suggestions concerning this award
endowment please feel free to contact me directly (e-mail:
TM0GLK1@NIU; telephone: 815-753-7105).
Sincerely,
Gary L. Kreps, Ph.D.
