Questions from our Readers:

QUESTION:  "Can you recommend a reasonably priced horse feed for a 28 year old horse that has no back teeth left?" ~ June M.

"I recommend Purina's Equine Senior. It is an excellent product. Also, add corn oil as a top dressing. Start off with 1/4 cup twice a day and increase
to no more than 1 cup twice a day. Of course, he needs to have his teeth checked by an experienced person. Good luck." ~ N. Jack, Ph.D.

"Senior horse feed is expensive, but worth the $ if you are feeding a horse with limited teeth -- it has worked for me.  It is alfalfa based, and actually if fed the right amount, you won't even need hay -- which some horses have a hard time with  when they get older.  I would be careful NOT to feed any hard pelleted feed or cubes, as they could cause choke.  Also, horses without all of their teeth have a hard time breaking the grain up, and making it useful to them.  A rolled feed or cracked corn & rolled oats would work also (do not use more than 30% corn).
Water can be added to the feed if the horse cannot chew much at all, making it easier for them to consume, and reducing any instance of choke."

10,000 Pregnant Mares

On Friday, Oct 10, 2003, Ayerst held meeting in Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba with all of the PMU ranchers who hold
contracts with  them.  It was announced that 1/3 of the approximately 450 ranches currently operating would be cut this year....effective immediately.
The remaining ranches would have their quota cut by 1/3 to 1/2.
Naturally this news was a blow to all PMU producers and will affect all of them negatively.
.

What it means to all of us, is that a minimum of 10,000

pregnant mares will need to find homes.

In addition to the barn mares there will also be weanling, 2 year old and 3 year old fillies available. Some of the ranches will also have to sell their stallions.
That's what we are all here for. The market in Western Canada can not possibly support numbers like this. We need help from the rest of North America.
No one, including the ranchers, wants to see these pregnant mares go to slaughter.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

"I have been doing E.A.P. since 2000. I have not found a more powerful tool than horses.

I have had therapy sessions with people /children that were scared of horses and they still had a great session because the horse is such a good mirror of our own emotions. 90% of E.A.P. is done on the ground."

RAZORBACK ROUNDUP 2003

Last year Janet purchased a 4 year old American Paint Horse (Doc) from the Razorback Roundup Auction.

FROM DOC'S NEW OWNER:
"Yes, I am pleased with my horse.  I got a fair deal and could not have purchased this caliber of a horse for this price any where else. The training he had in the short time at the U of A was very well done and well documented.  I would and have told anyone who is looking for horses to contact you or to get in the website.  The portfolio is a real plus.  It gave me insight into Doc's past and how he thinks and has helped me in his training.  Need to publicize your auction more perhaps will raise the prices of the auction horses!  They were really nice horses - all of them."

BRIDGETTE'S NEW OWNER ENJOYING SHOWS WITH HER NEW HORSE:

"Here are some pictures of U.A. Miss Perfect Style aka Bridgette...

Bridgette was the 2003 Year end grand winner for 2 years & younger mares in halter at the North West Arkansas Horse Show Association.  She also won a 2nd place and a 3rd place in open color in this association.  Note:  she competed against some really nice horses in the open class.....not that Bridgette didn't deserve her 2nd & 3rd.....I was just really surprised to win those......because of the class of horses she was competing against."
