Module Overview and Objectives
This module concerns the garbage and recycling culture in Fayetteville. Students are provided a variety of exercises that tap into the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. This module also reflects the national standards of communication, culture, connections, comparaisons, and communities. The topics covered include:
The objectives of each segment are as follows:
Specialized vocabulary:
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the key vocabulary concepts by using them in the different activities that follow.
People Involved in General:
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the people involved by correctly matching the statements with the roles presented and by participating in in-class discussions in relation to the material.
From Purchase to Dump:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the garbage production and collection process by writing, in the target language, the history of any item of their choosing from purchase to dump.
From Purchase to Recycling Center:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the vocabulary for recycling by identifying and writing key vocabulary words from the song they hear.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the vocabulary for recycling by accurately and appropriately using the vocabulary in a song or poem.
To Burn or to Dump, That Is the Question!
Students will demonstrate their comprehension of the reading passage by correctly responding, in writing, to the questions.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the topic and the vocabulary by preparing, presenting and defending their assigned approach to garbage disposal.
Recycling, Burden or Blessing?
Students will demonstrate their ability to use their new knowledge of the vocabulary by developing a survey with accurately written questions and by utilizing this survey while communicating orally with individuals from the community.
Yard Waste
Students will identify elements of yard waste and will write accurate statments in the past or the future tense.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the vocabulary and of the different geographical regions by obtaining and presenting a visual, unlike the one displayed in the module, to the class and discussing the potential yard waste.

Students will demonstrate comprehension of the aural segments by responding correctly to true or false statements.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the vocabulary by writing a first person account of the day in the life of a garbage person in the target language.
Tyler, the garbage producer
Students will demonstrate comprehension of the aural segments and the vocabulary by filling in the blanks with the appropriate word or words.
Kelly, the recycler
Students will demonstrate aural comprehension by correctly matching the questions with the aural segments.
Kissin' Cousins
Students will demonstrate comprehension of the aural passage by responding correctly to questions.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of their new topic and vocabulary, as obtained through the interview and their web search, by creating a written passage about the visual provided as it relates to garbology.
Bizarre - Pack Rats!
Students will construct knowledge of a new term presented to them by reading the definition in the target language, communicating with others to build their understanding of the topic and by identifying and presenting related objects to the class.
