Terry, the Garbage Person
Terry could be male or female. It doesn't matter. But, the point is you want to have listening components as a part of your web page. Not long passages but effective and informative passages that are accompanied by appropriate visuals. In this exercise, you would have students read the appropriate written question and then listen to the accompanying response given. For example, they might read these questions and then listen to the responses:
Tell us about your self.
What are the challenges of this job?
What are the benefits of this job?
What event stands out in your career as a garbage man?
A follow up activity would be to provide students with true or false statements that they must answer. For example:
____ Terry is a new garbage collector.
____ Terry gets off work at 10:00 each day.
____ Terry met George Bush one day on the job.
____ Terry now works at the Governor's mansion.
Then, follow up this activity with a creative composition. Students could write a first person, present tense diary account of a day in the life of a garbage person.
